If You are Involved in a Crash

Despite the best efforts of everyone, there may come a time when you are involved in a crash. At some point, you’ll have time to figure out what went wrong.

All drivers affected by the crash and their insurance companies can determine who was to blame. For now, immediately after the crash, you must ACT!

  • You are required to stop for any type of crash. Exit your vehicle and look for anyone who is injured.
  • With a normal fender bender where there are no injuries, all drivers should exchange name, address, registration, and license info. If anyone witnessed the crash, obtain their information as well.
  • Call, or direct someone to call 911; advise responders if anyone needs medical assistance if there are injuries.
  • Do your best to care for any injured party. Move them only if it is absolutely necessary because they are in immediate danger. Otherwise, wait for those who are trained to deal with injured victims to arrive.
  • Try to keep injured parties together, lying or sitting in one area. The same is true for non injured parties. While they may not have visible injuries, the shock of the crash may have dazed them. Individuals in this state could become disoriented and wander too close to passing traffic.
  • If you strike a parked vehicle, call the police; try to find the vehicle’s owner as well.
  • If you are uninsured and cause a crash that results in $500 or more in property damage, personal injury, or death, you must file a form called SR-31with the Safety Responsibility unit of the ALEA.
