Move Over Law

In the past number of years, far too many law enforcement officers were killed as they assisted stranded motorists. The Move Over Law was passed to prevent these unnecessary deaths. Simply put, if you are traveling along a road and you see any vehicle pulled over and displaying flashing lights, MOVE OVER.

When and if safe, signal and move one lane away from the stopped vehicle if you are on a road with 4 or more lanes. If you cannot do so because it is not safe or traffic is to heavy, slow to at least 15 mph below the posted speed limit until you pass the stopped vehicles.

If you are on a two lane road with traffic in both directions, slow down and pull as far away from the stopped vehicle as possible while remaining in your travel lane. If the posted speed limit is 25 mph or more, lower your speed by 15 mph until you pass the vehicle. If the posted limit is 20 mph or less, lower your speed by 10 mph.

The Move Over Law is not just for emergency vehicles. You must move to the side or slow down when any vehicle displays flashing lights. This includes emergency vehicles, maintenance vehicles, wreckers and tow trucks, and even passenger vehicles with emergency flashers activated.
