This scenario is probably the least likely emergency you will face. That said, it is probably the emergency situation where the outcome is easiest to predict. Earlier in the course you learned about the proper behavior around railroad crossings. In a rare instance and for whatever reason, you may suddenly find that your vehicle has stalled and sits on railroad tracks. Hopefully, you checked carefully in both directions, but half way through the crossing, your vehicle stalls.
In a case like this, it does not matter that the path seemed clear when you started to cross the tracks. If a train comes from either direction, your vehicle will be destroyed. You don’t even have to question what will happen to anyone who remains inside.
If you do not believe a train is approaching, put your vehicle in neutral and push it as far off the tracks as you can. That is for vehicles with automatic transmissions. If you drive a stick shift, turn on the ignition, engage the clutch and put the vehicle into second gear or low gear. Then, have somebody with you push the vehicle completely off the tracks.
